Application

The W.E.B. DuBois Scholars Institute is a racially and ethnically diverse private residential non-profit leadership development program for high-achieving high school students. Students who entered the tenth or eleventh grade in the fall of 2009 are eligible to participate. Students must be willing to attend this residential program for the full session including weekends. The Institute will be held from from June 26, 2010 to July 31, 2010 at Princeton University.

Participants are selected on the basis of their grade point average in courses related to the Institute’s curriculum with a minimum of a B or 3.0 average; academic trends in achievement; written and verbal communication skills; letters of recommendation; demonstrated leadership potential; and parents’/guardians’ willingness to play an active role in the Institute.

Prospective participants must provide the information listed below. We strongly encourage students to apply online, however, information submitted via postal mail should be typewritten or printed legibly in pen; and consist of an original, and three photocopies of all application materials.

 

  • You must be a freshman or sophomore in high school.
  • You must have at least a B average in a competitive academic program.
  • You must be at least in upper quarter of your class.
  • You must write an essay consisting of at least 300 words that describes your education and career goals; describes community service activities and/ or leadership roles you have performed; and states why you wish to participate in the Institute.
  • You must supply two (2) letters of recommendation.
  • Your parents must be willing to play an active role in program.
  • You must complete student application form.
  • You must submit an official transcript.


Since applications will be evaluated as they are received, early applications are encouraged. Letters of recommendation will need to be reviewed before semi-finalist can be notified. Details will follow upon notification of Semi-finalist status. Finalists will be informed no later than 10 days after final interview or by May 1, 2010.

The review of applicants will be performed in an expeditious manner and semi-finalists will be notified and those residing within 300 miles of Princeton, New Jersey will be interviewed at an Orientation and Screening Program  at Princeton University. Arrangements will be made to interview other semi-finalists who cannot attend.

Arrangements for field trips to Great Adventure and college tours are under way. In addition, we have also reserved swimming and gym facilities at Princeton University for recreation. We anticipate several students with extra-curricular talent. Accordingly, there will be talent and fashion shows, and "open mic" poetry readings for students organized by the Residential Academy staff to enhance recreational activities. Therefore, the fees received from parents are used to provide the best possible program for participants.
