Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of W.E.B. DuBois’ The Souls of Black Folks

An Inquiry & Symposium
On Strategies & Solutions

October 31 – November 1, 2003
at
PRINCETON UNIVERSITY

Co-Sponsored by:

The African American Studies Program of Princeton University

Conference Goal:
To identify barriers, develop strategies and solutions to eliminate the High Achiever’s Gap within the African American student population. There is a serious underrepresentation of these students at most elite levels. This underrepresentation not only speaks to the prospect of African Americans in the decision-making forums of our country, but also subverts the creation of achieving academic cultures in the educational institutions that serve the bulk of African American students.

The mission of the W.E.B. DuBois Scholars Institute is to work with high achieving students from this demographic to develop a cadre of young leaders and scholars imbued with a commitment to community building. This conference is envisioned as a seminal forum for reframing the now ubiquitous discussion of ‘Closing the Achievement Gap’ by revisiting DuBois’ emphasis on “The Talented Tenth” for cultivating capacity within the minority community in both our relatively integrated suburban areas, as well as in primarily segregated, underprivileged areas.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this conference, participants will be able to

  • benefit from increased knowledge enabling them to identify and define concepts/issues about the High Achiever’s Gap
  • communicate issues about the High Achiever’s Gap to their respective organizational systems at the individual, administrative and community levels
  • have heightened awareness and interest in closing the academic achievement gap that exists between high achieving African American students and their counterparts in other ethnic groups
  • utilize concepts, frameworks and tools to close the High Achiever’s Gap within diverse populations
